Transforming Hospital Culture: The Success of the 'Hello, My Name Is' Campaign

In healthcare, communication is essential for patient safety and satisfaction. As a former employee in a hospital, We recognised the importance of the "Hello, My Name Is" campaign and decided to take action to ensure it was successfully implemented. Here, I will share how I turned this campaign into a process that engaged staff and improved patient experiences.

The "Hello, My Name Is" campaign was introduced by Dr. Kate Granger, a terminally ill doctor, who recognised the lack of introductions from healthcare professionals during her hospitalisation. The campaign encourages healthcare professionals to introduce themselves to patients, which not only improves communication but also establishes trust and empathy between healthcare professionals and patients.

To ensure the success of the campaign, I created a process that engaged staff and provided an opportunity for them to share their thoughts and ideas. First, I created a video that explained the campaign and its importance. The video featured interviews with patients who had experienced the benefits of the campaign and healthcare professionals who had implemented it successfully.

After watching the video, staff were required to complete an online form that asked them to reflect on the campaign and share their own experiences. The form also provided an opportunity for staff to suggest "quick wins" that could improve patient experiences. These ideas ranged from small changes like providing more comfortable chairs in waiting areas to larger initiatives like improving the discharge process.

Through this process, I was able to engage staff and ensure they understood the importance of the campaign. It also provided an opportunity for staff to share their own ideas and feel invested in the success of the campaign.

The results of the campaign were overwhelmingly positive. Patient satisfaction scores improved, and staff reported feeling more connected to patients and their colleagues. The "Hello, My Name Is" campaign became ingrained in the hospital's culture, and staff members continued to implement it long after the initial process was created.

As a result, by implementing the "Hello, My Name Is" campaign in a hospital it can have a significant impact on patient experiences and communication between healthcare professionals and patients. By creating a process that engages staff and provides an opportunity for them to share their ideas, the campaign can become ingrained in the hospital's culture and lead to long-term success.
